"Migu’s Day" is the first short story written by Wang Shu Mei. Inspired by her husband's childhood memories in an indigenous community, this debut won the First Prize for Short Stories at the 2002 Taiwan Literature Award. The story is told from the perspective of a 12-year-old boy, it depicts how a Truku family in Hualien's Branaw village struggled to survive between traditional culture, poverty, and sickness in the 1970s. The author uses a simple yet delicate writing style to portray the authentic details and atmosphere of tribal life at that time. The story revolves around Migu’s family: a father who is a hunter but feels lost, a mother who is diligent yet emotionally distant, a younger sister battling disease and Migu who takes the responsibility of looking after the siblings. This edition also contains an English version and is a great recommendation for those interested in Taiwan indigenous and Hualien literature.
