The Hidden Steps Behind Breakthrough Success
Stop blaming yourself for a lack of inspiration—creativity doesn't just appear out of thin air. Instead, unearth it like an archaeologist on a dig: through surveying, gridding, excavating, and sifting.
Step 1
SURVEYING: Identify the right problem
Most people assume brainstorming is the first step of creativity, but that's like digging randomly. Skilled creators first survey their terrain and look for signs of promising ground. You do that by identifying the right problem to solve first and foremost.
Step 2
GRIDDING: Search systematically
When archeologists dig, they set up lines of string to break everything down into manageable chunks. In a similar way, you need tools and systems that will make your search for ideas systematic. Form a guiding question to serve as a compass for your search. Then think inside the box and look for ideas from other fields.
Step 3
DIGGING: Unearth possibilities
The aim at this step is to get as many ideas as possible out of the ground. Most people stop generating new ideas too early. Make the distinction between idea generation and idea selection. Look for those sparks or nascent ideas that are compelling, generative, and sometimes uncomfortable.
Step 4
SIFTING: Choose ideas to pursue
The final step is to analyze your discoveries and figure out which ones to pursue. This requires deep analysis and careful scrutiny, putting aside gut feelings, and an emphasis on learning from setbacks along the way.
