Good companies don't fail because their missions were naive or their founders lack talent. They fail because the structures reward value extraction rather than value creation. Culture alone is not enough because founders leave and missions drift. The solution is not to abandon entrepreneurship but to redesign it. Engineer your company so it will stay good now and in the future.

Companies do not become corrupted because their founders lack character or because capitalism naturally destroys ideals. They become corrupted because they are built inside systems that reward short-term extraction and financial gain above all else. Your challenge, therefore, is not merely to lead ethically but to design organizations that can resist these pressures from the get go.
Chapter 3 將使命鎖進系統
Lock the mission into the system
公司不是孤立的機器,在密閉的容器裡獨自創造利潤。每個組織都會產生連鎖反應,影響供應商、競爭對手、監管機構、員工、顧客和社會規範。無論你有心或無意,公司都會向外界投射價值觀。真正的問題不在於你的組織是否會改變周圍的世界,而在它會助長什麼樣的世界。要防止公司腐敗,傳遞使命是這場賽局的關鍵。
A company is not an isolated machine generating profits inside a sealed container. Every organization creates ripple effects. It influences suppliers, competitors, regulators, employees, customers, and social norms. Whether you intend it or not, your company projects values outward. The real question is not whether your organization shapes the world around it, but what kind of world it helps create. Mission transmission is the name of the game when it comes to becoming incorruptible.
